When looking to create our sunglasses, we knew that we wanted to make them as sustainable as possible, without sacrificing the structural integrity of them (sorry paper straws!).

From it's durability characteristics, to it's amazing growth rate, we knew bamboo was the perfect material for making eco-friendly sunglasses that are perfect for any adventure!

With a strength-to-weight ratio greater than steel, bamboo is one of the strongest natural materials out there. With a tensile strength of over 28,000 pounds per square inch, it surpasses steel comfortable. On top of that, it is 2-3 times harder and stronger than most hardwoods!

The first thing you'll realise when you put your new Koalaty sunnies on for the first time is their weight. Not because they're too heavy, but because of how much lighter they are compared to your traditional plastic pair. In fact, bamboo sunnies are up to 30% lighter than your traditional plastic pair. Add their durability and weight together, and you've got yourself the perfect pair for those long adventure days!

Bamboo is often labelled as the world's most renewable material thanks to its unique qualities!

One major quality is the fact that it grows so easily! Whilst standard trees can take upwards of 30 years to fully mature, bamboo can grow to its full height within a single season. In fact, some species of bamboo can grow up to a metre in one day!

Because bamboo is technically a grass, it also requires no fertiliser, no replanting, no fertiliser, and very little water! On top of that, bamboo actually releases 35% more oxygen into the air compared to trees of the same size!

Here at Koalaty we only use BSCI and FSC approved sources of bamboo.

When it comes to the little plastic that we do use, we only use recycled plastics.

Not only are all of our glasses fitted with category 3 polarised lenses, they are also made to be as sustainable as possible. Featuring biodegradable, polarised, and UV400 rated lenses, feel confident knowing your eyes are protected whilst out conquering the wild!
